Jacaranda Tree

November 11, 2024 | 5 Comments

I finally got around to sketching a local jacaranda tree. I sketched this house in August when the jacaranda’s leaves were yellow (I love these trees when they are losing their leaves), and I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to park my car opposite and use my purple hues.

The jacarandas have been especially nice this year and seem to have bloomed early. But is this just my imagination/short memory?

I’m enjoying the last few weeks of them! I know from previous years that they are normally all gone by the beginning of December.

We all love the Jacaranda’s here in Sydney don’t we! I think the bright new tip growth on the tree behind the house is new foliage on a Callistemon variety that is bursting out for Summer – I have several in my garden that look just the same. Thanks Liz for sharing the colours of Spring in Sydney.
    Best wishes, Marion Starr

THanks Marion – I hope you are well. Oops I wrote paperbark but I meant to write bottlebrush (the paperbark flowers are out at the moment but are white) – and yes since doing this sketch I’m noticing more of the pink leaves around. Thanks for clarifying for me! I love the new leaves and the new bark colours just as much as jacarandas!

I first became interested in Urban Sketching in 2002 when I happened upon Barbara Stetcher (author of “Travel Sketchbooking”,Cordova Press) as she sat and sketched at Donegal Castle in Ireland. Later, I discovered your book “Five Minute Sketching: Architecture”.

    I thoroughly enjoy your work.

If we live in Sydney and we are artists then we are obliged to capture this purple! LOL. I agree with you that I think the Jacarandas are blooming earlier and are the best, brightest, fullest, freshest I can remember seeing for a few years.

It’s been lovely to see some of your local and city sketches lately Liz. And to see those beautiful Neocolours. They are so creamy as you say, but I experienced the ‘melt’ potential the other day when I sat out in the sun with them beside me. All adds to the fun and adventure of urban sketching!

I hadn’t even read your text and I knew that was a jacaranda! Perfect color for sketching it! I also had a bit of disorientation because it’s autumn so how can you have jacarandas in bloom! Ha! Love our global community!
