Drawing more objects at home

October 21, 2024 | 9 Comments

I’ve been trying to sketch more objects at home in the past week or so.

I’m interested in choosing objects that relate to my day, and I love the way that I can play with watercolour and pigment parties when sketching a defined subject matter.

Switching to an A4 sketchbook is also helping me sketch more objects, but I’ll discuss that in my next article.

Here are a few recent sketches…

Embroidery thread and a washer:

After not touching my cross-stitch for two years, I picked it up again. Within two weeks, I had finished it and started another. I also went through my pile of embroidery floss to see if I had any colours used in the current kit in case I ran out. These two colours—green and orange—are two typical hues in my new cross-stitch.

I was missing a washer on my embroidery frame, and while starting to set up a sewing corner in my new place, I found it.

Tape measure:

I used it to measure the space in my sewing corner so I could design it. And yes, I will share more once it is set up.

Dagger brush

I misplaced the dagger brush, which I carry with me everywhere. This 1/2-inch Series 772 Rosemary dagger brush was given to me by Virginia Hein in Amsterdam in 2019, and it’s been what I’ve used in my kit ever since. The old brush was still totally usable ( if I needed a thin edge, I would just press the hairs together), but it was time to replace it. The end of the handle has been sharpened to fit in my toothbrush holder—see more here.

My desktop vacuum:

I’m finally getting around to setting up my work desk, and I’ll have to find a place to store this ladybug so that it’s handy for picking up eraser shavings.

I’ll share these sketches again in the context of a full page in my next article – so stay tuned for that.

What a wonderful idea to have a desktop vacuum! Can I ask where you got it?

Love seeing household objects being sketched and how you’ve combined WCP and paint. I’m loving using WCPs after the Travel Sketching course. Thanks as always Liz!

I love your sketches of embroidery floss, that green looks very familiar to me . Like Ginie, I also have enjoyed using WCP since doing Travel Sketching, great course. Thanks Liz , they are so portable and expressive.

The objects sketches really always tell the story of the days in such interesting and personal ways, don’t they! I love them! Like the other commenters, I too have been finding the water color pencils an excellent, fast choice which has me more successfully things and at moments when I was previously skipping it. Travel Sketching was a great class. I even did a quick watercolor pencil sketch of the grocery store on my errands yesterday, when previously I’d thought it too hard, overwhelming and would take too long. I grabbed my watercolor pencils and did it in just 5 shapes! I did add water once I got home, but I have a sketch in exactly the kind of situation I used to want to, but held back. Thank you for that!
