After putting together a Beach Sketch collection, I just had to do the same for my food/cafe sketches as well, didn’t I? 🙂
So in this article, I have included all my sketches from Port Macquarie cafes. Most of these were done in the company of others so they represent a degree of reflex sketching. As I was with friends I generally did a quick outline with ink, took a photo and then applied the colour (a combination of coloured pencils, GoldFaber Aqua Markers and watercolour) after I had eaten using my memory and photo reference. I did finish all of these sketches while I was out (ie. I didn’t add colour back home).
As I’m still experimenting with this pencil, marker and watercolour combo I did find it hard at times to know what I was doing. In hindsight, it would have been easier to just stick to ink and wash. But I’m happy that I pushed myself and there are some fun colours and textures as a result.
I certainly ate well during my trip!!! 🙂
Hmm, I feel hungry now!
I really enjoy doing some food sketching – it’s a little stressful at times (if you want to eat your food while it’s hot – which is my goal) but so much fun!

Wonderful food, wonderful sketches!
Liz, you’re so good at making coffee in cups look drinkable, but I’m loving the eggs even more – they look fab 🙂
Thanks Diane! I love sketching egg dishes and exploring different combos for the shadows on the eggs 🙂
Thanks Lisa!
What a delightful and yummy vacation you’ve shared. I love the tables and umbrellas, and am reminded that just sketching our meals is a quick way to stay connected with sketching. Plus working on making circles, as in the plates and cups, is always a good challenge for me to aspire to. Thank you!
THanks Beth – yes food is always a fun and colourful subject!
