PMQ2024: The last two days

January 29, 2025 | 4 Comments

It’s finally time to wrap up this series containing all my sketches from my 2-week trip to Port Macquarie last November. So here goes…

The last visit to Shelly Beach was not what I hoped for. A hot and sticky morning with salty fog! Not pleasant at all. I started this sketch with some purple shapes and then layered over some oil pastel.

I then met up with my friend V for brunch at Banks and sketched a boat. (I was playing with opacity as I sketched the food!)

We then sat by the river and talked for 1.5 hours. I did this sketch almost entirely with Poscas. The only watercolour used was for the grey water. I was having a lot of fun creating texture with Poscas!

I had a little time to start packing and then visited Flynns Beach for the last time. I didn’t complete this sketch, but I like it as it is (and it is a good reminder of the steps I was taking!).

Dinner at V’s and then I sketched some of her teacups. It was an extremely humid evening and my watercolours were not drying!

I normally like to hit the road early when I have a 4-hour drive ahead of me, but I didn’t want to say goodbye to V, so we had one more cafe visit together.

Once again, I stopped at Bulahdelah and went for a bit of a walk. Two quick sketches and a discovery of a ‘new’ technique right at the end of my trip. I’ve been using this technique in my everyday sketches since I came home and will be talking about it during the first livestream (this week) inside my new Sketching Adventure Community on Patreon. I’ve also filmed a detailed sketchbook tour of all my pages from this trip, which is available inside the community.

Thanks for coming along with me on this very special break at Port Macquarie. I hope you have enjoyed seeing all my fun experiments and sketches of all those beautiful Port beaches. See them all here.

This has been a joy to see as you show us how much fun can be put into a holiday. I’m sure that all the observation, colour choices and marks made enhance your memory of the time in PMQ, plus you’re teaching us all about it with every new revelation. You are wonderful. Keep it up!
