I’m very excited to announce that I will be giving a workshop as part of the first ever Sydney Pen Show on Saturday 18 August. It’s really great that members of the local Fountain Pen community – Fountain Pen Oceania – are putting this together.
My workshop will provide a brief introduction to urban sketching with fountain pens and it’s designed for beginners. Bring your own fountain pen and all other materials provided thanks to the wonderful sponsorship of Larry Post and Stillman & Birn Premium Sketchbooks.
Click here to purchase tickets to either the 1pm or the 3pm sketching workshop. Please note: there is a separate ticket for entry to the Pen Show.
Here is the full description:
This workshop will provide an introduction to urban sketching using fountain pens.
Through a few short exercises we will look at:
- why fountain pens are such a great tool for sketching
- how to use a fountain pen for sketching (it’s different from just writing with them)
- how to draw from observation with a simple line drawing
- how to add 3-dimensionality to our drawings using ink shading
- how to apply some simple watercolour washes to our ink drawings
Materials:
Please bring your own fountain pen (any kind will do) filled with some dark ink eg. dark, brown, dark blue, dark grey, dark green etc
Any kind of ink will do, the ink does not need to be permanent.
All other materials will be provided: paper, brushes, watercolour – thanks to the wonderful sponsorship of Larry Post and Stillman & Birn Sketchbooks.
If you would like to bring an additional empty fountain pen there will be some De Atramentis Document Ink to try.
Click here to purchase tickets to either the 1pm or the 3pm workshop.
Please note: there is a separate ticket for entry to the Pen Show.

Gah! I love fountain pens, I love sketching, I love Liz Steel. Still a little far to go for a workshop ?
perhaps a little far – would love you to be there!
I am booked in for the 1 pm. Am a nervous urban sketcher who pencils in first! Hoping you can get me going straight in with pen. Looking forward to it and meeting you. Love your work.
Now Monday before I checked my emails and your two workshops are already sold out! What a pity I had such a busy weekend! I will come to the pen show anyway. Love your work .
