A varied day of sketching

A few Wednesdays ago, I filled three A4 double-page spreads with a varied approach to each sketch.

The first sketch was of a local house while sipping my coffee. I started with some watercolour pencil (WCP) setup lines, then ink then more WCP and finally some markers.

At 2pm I headed into the City and did this quick sketch of an outdoor cafe near the entrance to the Botanic Gardens. It was fun to alternate between lines and shapes using ink (fude pen), marker and WCP.

Here is the full spread with these two sketches.

Next, I went inside the Botanic Gardens and sketched a fig tree, playing with different media, textures and complex colours. (Necolor II, ink and watercolour.)

Here is the full sketch and double-page spread, which also includes a quick ink drawing.

I walked towards the harbour and, before leaving the gardens, sketched the Sydney Opera House using watercolour pencil, Neocolor II, and marker.

The last sketches were done while having some dinner in an empty food court. I started with shapes, then added ink and finally a little marker to soften textures.

Here is the finished spread.

A fun day of sketching and experimentation!

Finishing the pages as you go must have been hard! I find it’s such a different brain to finish pages, versus sketch, you must have been switching gears all day! Love the sketches! Looks like the neocolor II are going well!

Great tree sketch, Liz. Your emails take my mind to another space (non-US election). Thank you!
