15 minute sketch of St Andrews

I had about 20 minutes to do a sketch last Wednesday evening, and for some crazy reason, I thought I could attempt to sketch the whole side of St Andrews Cathedral in Sydney City. The result was a lot of fun but a little wild! The only reason I was able to tackle this big, complex building in such a short time frame was that I started with a few big shapes and some important lines.

Do you ever attempt to sketch something super ambitious in a short time frame? I know that many of you are not comfortable doing this, and that’s totally understandable.

In preparation for my upcoming Travel Sketching course, I’ve been looking through the sketchbooks from my first overseas sketching trip. And I’ve been constantly amazed by how many risks I took back then (and I’m very thankful that I wrote notes and when and how I did most of my sketches).

I know that many of you struggle to sketch when you’re travelling, and so the main focus of this new course is to give you the confidence to start a sketch – even if time is limited and the scene is complex. These are specific techniques that I’ve developed for this course and never shared before.
